This film describes a few days in the lives of a writer named Harmon (played by John Cassavetes) and his sister Sarah (played by Gena Rowlands). Most of the film's plot takes place in Harmon's home, as they struggle through life: Harmon leads an extremely decadent life, getting by with alcohol, cigarettes, and a series of short-term relationships with women, whether they are women he meets through work or in entertainment venues. He is also a very incompetent father, leaving his 12-year-old son in a hotel while even teaching him to drink. His sister Sarah, due to her erratic behavior, is going through a divorce with her husband, and her daughter wants to live with her father, which causes her great emotional pain and nearly drives her to a breakdown. At the end of the film, Sarah leaves Harmon's house to be with another man, while Harmon steps to the front of the screen to say goodbye to the audience, thus bidding farewell to his own life.
