The story is set against the backdrop of the Midwest wilderness after the end of the American Civil War. Thomas Dawson (played by John Wayne) starts from scratch, and with the help of his adopted son Matthew (played by Montgomery Clift) and his assistant Groot, he spends 14 years of hard work to finally establish his large ranch on a vast prairie in Texas.
