In the western part of Wyoming, USA, the reticent farmer Ennis (played by Heath Ledger) and the cheerful cowboy Jack (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) are assigned to herd sheep in a remote area where few people venture, accompanied only by their flock, leading a monotonous life. One cold, freezing night, under the influence of alcohol and hormones, they do the 'forbidden thing' and thus spend the best time of their lives on Brokeback Mountain. When the seasonal herding ends, pressured by societal expectations, Jack and Ennis reluctantly part ways and each gets married and has children. Ennis marries his childhood friend Alma and has two lovely daughters, while Jack moves to Texas, where his career flourishes with the support of his wife Lureen's family, and he has a son. Although they truly care for each other, they can only meet regularly once a year. Alma, who knows about their relationship, suffers immensely, and they find it impossible to satisfy their desire for reunion which only lasts a few days a year. Then an unexpected event occurs...
