This film is based on a true story. Young doctor Mortimer (played by Hugh Dancy), who embraces the idea of saving lives, has been fired multiple times due to his incompatible views with the operational principles of many hospitals. In his search for a job, he finds a clinic run by Dr. Dalrymple, which specializes in treating women for a condition known as "hysteria." Here, Mortimer learns the technique of finger massages and encounters the doctor's two very different daughters. The elder sister, Charlotte (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), is a feminist running a relief center, while the younger sister, Emily (played by Felicity Jones), comes from a prestigious background. As the hospital's business improves, Mortimer struggles to keep up. Due to a hand cramp, he fails to satisfy one of the clients and is subsequently dismissed by the doctor. Returning to his friend Edmond's (played by Rupert Everett) home, he sees the electric feather duster he invented and is struck by a brilliant idea. This idea brings relief and joy to women, unknowingly supporting their liberation. A story filled with humor and affection unfolds.
