This work, born in the 1970s, has been hailed as a legendary piece in the history of Italian CULT cinema, and is referred to by many alternative film enthusiasts as "an eternal masterpiece of absurdist cinema." The directors, Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, are renowned masters of the Italian "Mondo" cruel documentary genre, having previously produced a documentary package including "Faces of Death 1, 2" and "Africa: A Savage Documentary," among others. However, this 1975 film is also their final work and is completely different from their previous ones; it lacks the gruesome violence of their earlier documentaries and is a fully fictional narrative film. The film is adapted from the cynical work "Candide" by the great French author Voltaire, yet the director uses a mad, absurd cinematic language to portray it. Candide is the son of a nobleman living in a castle in medieval Germany, with pure and beautiful thoughts, living a carefree and happy life. His philosophy teacher Pangloss tells him that he is living in the best of all possible worlds in the universe, where he cannot perceive the suffering and wars of other worlds. Candide’s pure and happy life changes completely after a fateful encounter when he falls madly in love with the king's daughter, leading to their discovery by the king during an affair. The two are expelled from the castle and can never return, cast into two different worlds. Only if Candide finds his lost love might he return to the castle's world. Thus, Candide embarks on a bizarre journey through different worlds; he enters the world of the Anglo-French War, where he is mistaken for a British spy by the French and is killed. His soul then reaches heaven, where he meets God, who offers him a chance to become an angel. However, he refuses, longing for the princess, so God returns his body, allowing him to fall into the world of the Roman Empire. During a military coup, he meets a black slave named Sagio, and together they begin their journey, moving from one world to another—from ancient Egypt to the African savannas, from the world of the Renaissance to the mysterious Inca civilization, from money-driven Wall Street in New York to war-torn Pakistan. They continually traverse various eras and worlds searching for true love, witnessing countless wars, deaths, cruelties, enslavements, fears, and diseases along the way. They sometimes find themselves lost in these tragic worlds. Ultimately, at the end of the world—in a valley—Candide finds the now-aged princess, who cannot return with him. She gives him a telescope, telling him that across the river lies his former world. With this telescope, he can see a pure-hearted version of himself living happily in a beautiful world free from hatred, wars, and all cruelties. He gazes through the lens and indeed sees a pure version of himself joyfully running through the forest towards the beautiful castle, gradually receding into the distance... Tears roll down his cheeks as he realizes he can never return to that original world, for his spirit has been tainted and is no longer pure. Thus, he decides to remain at the end of the world with the aging princess, while Sagio continues onward to another unknown world.
