The story takes place in the northeastern United States in the 19th century, where Abigail (played by Katherine Waterston) and her husband Dyah (played by Casey Affleck) run a farm. The heavy farm work leaves little room for communication between Abigail and her husband, and the recent death of their daughter due to illness has further estranged the couple. One day, a young couple arrives at the farm—Talli (played by Vanessa Kirby) and Fanny (played by Christopher Abbott). Talli is in a similar situation to Abigail; she is also in a subordinate position within her family and is being neglected by her husband because she cannot get pregnant. The two women, each carrying deep emotional scars, quickly bond and develop a genuine friendship that, over time, matures into a fragrant love.
