Matías Quer, who portrays Gonzalo, is born into a middle-class family and attends an expensive private school where the children are filled with arrogance, making the silent and shy Gonzalo feel out of place. An open-minded priest and principal boldly enrolls several free students from poor shantytowns, and in a country where 92% of the population is of mixed Spanish and Indigenous descent, the 2% of pure European blood is treated like nobility, hence the privileged children naturally look down upon these newcomers. The previously calm school is no longer peaceful, as the conflict between the wealthy and poor classes escalates. Despite the ongoing conflict, the impoverished boy Machuca, played by Ariel Mateluna, establishes a pure friendship with Gonzalo, who is from the opposing side. The coup erupted on September 11, 1973, leading to a significant setback for communism in Chile. The impoverished classes suffer the most, as equality and human rights become meaningless, while the dictatorial regime ruthlessly crushes everyone’s lives. Gonzalo and Machuca's fragile friendship ultimately reaches its end.
