Intro： The Butterfly Lovers: Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai 1954In the manor by the Yushui River in Zhujiazhuang, Shangyu County, lives the beautiful and virtuous young lady Zhu Yingtai (played by Yuan Xuefen). She admires the scholars who come and go in front of the manor, but unfortunately, due to feudal ethics, a girl with no talent is considered virtuous, and her father strictly forbids her from stepping out of the boudoir. Yingtai sighs over this and then comes up with a plan; she disguises herself as a fortune teller to persuade her father and finally obtains permission to go to Hangzhou to study. During her studies, Yingtai carefully conceals her identity, and her friendship with Brother Liang deepens, along with her secret affection for this scholarly young man. Before long, three years pass, and Yingtai receives a letter from her father urging her to return home. With a poignant farewell at the age of eighteen, although it implies a secret lover, their parting ultimately becomes forever… This film is adapted from a traditional Chinese folk tale.
