Intro: Nineteen forty-fourIn 1944, the German forces and the Soviet Leningrad Front fought a series of battles for control of the Narva Isthmus. In July, the Soviet army captured Narva, an ancient city that had long served as a boundary between Russia and the Western world for nine hundred years. Behind Narva, the Tannenberg Line was the last defense of Estonia's capital, Tallinn. A group of young Estonian men in their twenties volunteered to join the armed SS 20th Division and began to fight the Soviet armored units on the Eastern Front in resistance to the Soviet occupation. This was not the first time Estonia had become a battlefield between the East and the West, between Germans and Slavs. The fighting had been ongoing for over seven hundred years, starting from the great battle on the ice of Lake Chud. The Estonians, caught in the middle, inevitably became victims of history. In September, after Finland announced the cessation of military cooperation with Germany and signed the Moscow armistice, the surrounded German forces decided to withdraw from Estonia. The Soviet army followed closely behind the Germans until they reached the Estonian capital Tallinn. Estonian soldiers in the Red Army witnessed firsthand the event as the blue, black, and white flag symbolizing Estonian national independence was replaced by the Soviet red flag on September 22, four days after it had hung at the symbolic Herman Tower in Tallinn on September 18, when the German forces withdrew. The capture of Tallinn was not the final battle between the Soviets and Germans in Estonia. In November, in the muddy, dense forests of Saaremaa Island, Estonian soldiers, under the bombardment of German naval artillery, expelled the last contingent of German troops. The large-scale fighting finally came to an end, but peace and freedom did not descend upon this small territory, and the pain brought by the war remained difficult to heal. This was the year 1944 for the Estonians. In 1944, the German forces and the Soviet Leningrad Front fought a series of battles for control of the Narva Isthmus.
