The capture of Tallinn was not the final battle between the Soviets and Germans in Estonia. In November, in the muddy, dense forests of Saaremaa Island, Estonian soldiers, under the bombardment of German naval artillery, expelled the last contingent of German troops. The large-scale fighting finally came to an end, but peace and freedom did not descend upon this small territory, and the pain brought by the war remained difficult to heal.
