Intro: The Turmoil of the Late Ming DynastyIn the year 1627, at the age of 17, Chongzhen ascended the throne, taking over the severely damaged Ming dynasty from the hands of Emperor Xi Zhong. Internally, power was held in the hands of the powerful minister Wei Zhongxian, effectively making Chongzhen a puppet emperor, with all policies coming from Wei Zhongxian. However, he was not an incompetent ruler; he adopted a strategy of hiding his strength and biding his time, using tactics of appeasement and paralysis against Wei Zhongxian, while secretly cultivating capable talents. Once the foundation of his rule was stable, he proceeded step by step to solidify his position, eventually resolved the issue with the Ke Wei (the Kexi and Wei Zhongxian group) through skillful means. His political acumen and administrative capabilities were comparable to those of the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing dynasty in toppling the powerful minister Oboi. He was frugal and disciplined, clear-minded and simple in desire, worked diligently for better governance, surpassing the emperors of previous dynasties in diligence and capability. However, the fate of the Ming was already dwindling, and the inevitable transition of dynasties fell upon Chongzhen like drawing straws. His tragic fate was that he could not stop the collapse of the state with his own body, and the time and space history could afford him destined him to never become a ruler of revival. In 1644, Li Zicheng led the peasant army to capture Beijing, and Emperor Chongzhen hanged himself on Coal Mountain, marking the overthrow of the Ming dynasty. After Li Zicheng entered the capital, he sent the defector Tang Tong with 50,000 taels of silver and a letter from Wu Sangui's father, Wu Xiang, to persuade Wu Sangui to surrender. To preserve his own property and status in Beijing, Wu Sangui intended to submit to the rebel leader. However, upon hearing the news that his beloved mistress Chen Yuanyuan had become a concubine of Li Zicheng, he was infuriated and immediately executed the Great Shun envoy, requesting Prince Ruigong Dorgon to 'unite forces to eliminate the bandits,' which coincided with the Qing army's plans to enter the central plains. Dorgon quickly led the Qing troops into the borders to assist in the extermination. Li Zicheng received the news that Wu Sangui had refused to submit, so he personally led the army to battle alongside Wu Sangui against the Qing troops near the Shanhaiguan area in the 'Yipian Stone.' The 20,000 Qing cavalry launched an attack from the right flank, causing the peasant army to collapse under pressure. After the battle, the Qing troops all entered the borders. When Li Zicheng returned to Beijing, he held a coronation ceremony in the Imperial Hall, accepting the homage of officials. The very next morning, he led the rebel army away from Beijing, retreating towards Xi'an.
