Although Trevor (played by Brendan Fraser) is a geology professor at a university, he often does things that challenge tradition. He believes that Verne's novels are not science fiction, but actually exist. This opposing theory has turned him into a joke within the academy, ruining his academic reputation. However, Trevor does not care about this; he firmly believes that his theory is correct. To validate his theory, Trevor embarks on a journey to Iceland with his nephew Sean (played by Josh Hutcherson) and a local guide, Hannah (played by Anita Briem). During their travels, the three accidentally discover a peculiar cave and, while exploring, they break through thin ice and fall into a bottomless abyss. However, when they wake up, they find a mysterious world at the center of the Earth, filled with all sorts of bizarre creatures that perfectly match the scenes described in Verne's novel. The evidence has finally been found, but how do they bring the evidence back to the surface? Trevor and the others begin their quest for a way out...
