During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, the lay disciple of Shaolin, Hong Xiguan (played by Jet Li), is a member of the Tiandihui society, striving to overthrow the Qing dynasty and restore the Ming dynasty. Hong Xiguan is betrayed by his fellow disciple Ma Ning'er (played by Ji Chunhua), leading to the death of his family at the hands of traitors.
