Eight-year-old boy Bruno (played by Asa Butterfield) moves with his family from Berlin to the countryside due to a directive from his father, a Nazi officer. The environment and Bruno's behavior cause his mother to worry secretly, but his Nazi father stops any questioning of established policies at home. Bruno secretly befriends a boy named Shmuel on the other side of the fence and often brings him food. Amidst the tense family atmosphere and his sister's transition into adulthood, Shmuel is Bruno's only friend. One day, Bruno decides to go to the other side of the fence to meet Shmuel's father... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by John Boyne and won the Audience Award at the 2008 Chicago International Film Festival.
