Because of their love, they were banished to the mortal realm to endure torment for ten lives. The story begins in the tenth life. Zhu Jiaying (played by Cai Zhuoyan) goes disguised as a man to learn arts at the Xiaoyao Sect at the behest of her parents, encountering numerous dangers unbeknownst to her. Fortunately, she is rescued by Liang Zhongshan (played by Wu Zun) and the arriving Ma Cheng'en (played by Hu Ge). The perils of the Jianghu are an abstract concept to Jiaying, and after delivering her to the Xiaoyao Sect, Cheng'en heads to the capital to report back. During the time of practicing and playing at the Xiaoyao Sect, Jiaying and Zhongshan grow closer. While the grass-headed master (played by Yu Chengqing) is experimenting with alchemy and feigning death, Jiaying falls and loses consciousness while gathering fake herbs on the mountain. Zhongshan is shocked to discover she is a girl, feeling both surprised and sweet. The young lovers, just falling in love, soon encounter Ma Cheng'en returning from the capital, who insists that Jiaying must return home immediately. Oblivious to the impending changes that await them, Jiaying and Zhongshan agree to wait at home for his proposal. However, what the young lovers receive is a carefully crafted trap.
