In the late Sui Dynasty, Wang Renze (played by Yu Chenghui), the nephew of the Sui general Wang Shichong, was overseeing the construction of river defenses when he killed the rebel Zhang, known for his divine legs, but allowed Zhang's son, Xiao Huzai, to escape by jumping into the river. After being rescued by a Shaolin monk and taken into the temple, Xiao Huzai, in order to avenge his father, resolutely shaved his head to become a monk, adopting the Dharma name "Jueyuan" (played by Jet Li). After the captain of Wang Renze's guards encountered the shepherdess Bai Wuxia (played by Ding Lan), he lusted after her beauty and forcefully brought her back to his residence, intending to assault her after drinking. Fortunately, Jueyuan, who had come alone to seek vengeance, discovered this. During the rescue of Bai Wuxia, Jueyuan was injured by Wang Renze due to his inadequate martial skills, which motivated him to train even harder upon returning to the Shaolin Temple. Later, as Jueyuan aided Li Shimin, who was being pursued by Wang Renze, the Shaolin Temple faced calamity, and the responsibility on Jueyuan grew heavier.
