Little Elliott (Henry Thomas) discovers an unexpectedly lost little alien, whom he secretly takes in and introduces to his brother and sister. The children get along well with the alien, giving him chocolate, and taking him to the countryside to look for traces left by his family, excited by the alien's various extraordinary abilities. Gradually, a wonderful connection forms between Elliott and the alien, transcending the barriers of language communication. However, soon the existence of the alien is discovered by adults, prompting a ruthless manhunt. ET is captured and taken to a laboratory, and little Elliott falls seriously ill. The children become angry and spontaneously organize to rescue the alien. Elliott, driven by a call of the spirit, awakens and joins the rescue mission. Will they succeed?
