During the late Tang Dynasty, when the princes were vying for power, the rulers of Liou, Duan, and Li in the northwest Yellow River valley all sought to seize control of the world, leading to continuous battles. Prince Liou (played by Ji Chunhua) captured the Duan prince's residence, and when Prince Duan (Jin Dema) fled for his life, he was saved by the Yellow River hero Ma Yi (played by Yu Chenghui). Following this, Ma Yi's village was brutally attacked by Prince Liou and his troops. All of this was witnessed by Prince Li (played by Zhao Zhigang). Ma Yi then met the street performer Che Tian (played by Chunyao Shanshan), who, recognizing his martial prowess, encouraged him to set up a performance which earned him a considerable amount of money. Prince Li sent someone to persuade Ma Yi to join him; when this failed, they poisoned Ma Yi's eyes, making him blind. Ma Yi mistakenly believed that Che Tian was responsible for this and sought to kill him in revenge. Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, they became sworn brothers. Before long, Prince Duan welcomed Ma Yi into his residence. Despite Ma Yi being blind, his swordsmanship remained extraordinary, and Prince Duan treated him as a benefactor, using him to eliminate Prince Liou first. After Prince Duan sent assassins to intercept Prince Li and failed, he then aimed to kill Prince Li's daughter, Zhenzhen (Wan Qiong), but she was saved by the passing Ma Yi. Upon hearing this, Prince Duan devised a new plot, while Zhenzhen and Ma Yi had begun to develop feelings for each other.
