Captain Kurt Stevens (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), an American Air Force pilot on a mission in Afghanistan, suddenly wakes up to find himself on a high-speed train, sitting next to a stranger named Christina (played by Michelle Monaghan), who is talking to him. Kurt is bewildered as he doesn't understand why he is on this train and realizes that he is living under another person's identity. Just as he is confused, an explosion occurs on the train... Kurt wakes up again to find himself in a closed space capsule, where a female officer named Goodwin (played by Vera Farmiga) is communicating with him via video and asking him to report what happened on the train. While still trying to comprehend the situation, he is sent back to that train. After this time, Kurt finally understands that he is on a mission to investigate the Chicago train bombing, to find the terrorists and uncover their next target. Kurt is sent back to the high-speed train repeatedly, each time with only eight minutes to investigate. During these investigations, Kurt discovers that he had died a week ago. It turns out he is part of a secret mission called 'Source Code,' which reconstructs events using the brain cells of the deceased Kurt that are not yet fully dead, in order to reveal the truth. Ultimately, Kurt successfully completes the mission, but he decides to return to the train once again to save the innocent lives aboard...
