Johannes Klare is the senior, charismatic preacher of a fringe church in Stuttgart that operates unofficially and is self-supporting. He is assisted by his dedicated wife Lydia and her ex-con cousin Bernd Trampe. They come across a juvenile homeless busker named Simon Rützel, who provides insightful thoughts but refuses to go to the hospital due to his status as a drug overdose junkie. The childless couple takes Simon into their home and begins to view him as a lost son. A wealthy parishioner named Volker Reiche offers to privately fund the church's dream of establishing a community center, but Johannes becomes suspicious of his motives. Upon discovering Simon's homosexuality, Johannes chooses not to expel him and must confront the fact that the exorcist is a severe bigot. During Lydia's absence one weekend, Johannes yields to temptation when Simon accurately points out that he has suppressed his own gay desires for years. Later, he confesses this to Lydia, leading Simon to experience a relapse. The couple then strives to reclaim their lives and sense of purpose after the 'mortal sin' becomes exposed.
