Brazilian lifeguard Donato (played by Wagner Moura) makes the sea his home. One day, after two German tourists accidentally get caught in a current, Donato successfully rescues one of them named Konrad (played by Clemens Schick), but unfortunately, Konrad's best friend perishes at the bottom of the sea. During the process of searching for the body along the ocean current, Donato and Konrad develop feelings for each other, and the two eventually leave Brazil for Germany. Donato starts to attempt a life on land, until his younger brother Elton (played by Jesuíta Barbosa) grows up and flies to Berlin, angrily questioning why his brother left without saying goodbye. However, Elton soon becomes captivated by the exotic lifestyle... Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, who was nominated for the main competition at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival for his transgender-themed film 'Madame Satã,' presents 'The Future Coast' as his fifth film. This film is also the first co-production between Brazil and Germany and was nominated for the main competition at the 64th Berlin Film Festival. The movie employs a clear three-act structure to explore the protagonist's state of life and identity issues as he drifts from Latin America to Europe. Nominated for the Golden Bear Award for Best Film at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival, directed by Karim Aïnouz.
