The story begins with Frank writing an autobiographical novel, interspersed with flashbacks of his mother Bernadette's life. Bernadette was a beauty from a small village near Normandy, France, who, after World War II, escaped from her parents' tragic homeland by sneaking onto an American warship to Ireland. She gave birth to a dwarf child, Frank, whose father she did not know. Bernadette first became the mistress of a customs officer named Jack and later returned to Texas with an American man. Neither of the two men Bernadette loved could become Frank's permanent father, so the resilient Bernadette had to take Frank back to Ireland. Upon discovering she was pregnant again, she committed suicide by drowning. After publishing this novel, Frank unexpectedly reunites with Jack's eldest daughter. Their long-awaited reunion many years later allows two people who once thought they were fated to be alone in love to regain their confidence. The film ends with their wedding banquet, where Frank takes his bride to the rooftop and they dance under the starry sky, inspired by Jack.
