Blind masseur Aichi looks ordinary, but he is a highly skilled swordsman. One day, while traveling across the country, he arrives at Masakatsu in Shimosa and stays with a gangster, Sugawara Goro (played by Yutaka Yamauchi), with whom he has met before. At that moment, Goro is engaged in a conflict with a gang led by Shigezo Sasakawa (played by Ryozo Shimada), and tensions are high between both sides. Sasakawa takes in a down-and-out samurai named Hirate Sake (played by Shigeru Chiba), who ends up befriending the equally upright Aichi. However, they belong to opposing factions and must face the cruel reality of swords drawn against each other... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name in Hiroshi Shida's essay collection "Futokoro Techo" and is the first installment of the "Zatoichi series."
