In 1805, Napoleon dominated the European continent, while at sea, only the British fleet could rival him. Captain Jack (played by Russell Crowe) of the HMS Surprise was ordered to intercept the French ship Acheron as it entered the South Pacific. The two ships first encountered each other off the northern coast of Brazil, where Acheron, with its superior firepower and armor, defeated the Surprise, allowing Jack to narrowly escape thanks to the foggy weather. Although the initial battle ended badly, Jack, who had once followed Admiral Nelson, remained confident in his ship and refused to turn back, instead choosing to study his opponent. Soon, the two ships met again; Jack used a decoy tactic to turn the tide, tracking the Acheron all the way to the stormy Cape Horn. Jack's persistence met with opposition from his friend, the ship's doctor Stephen, but Jack commanded an elite crew, and despite various hardships, the crew maintained their focused training. Stephen's unexpected injury forced Jack to halt the chase and rest on a small island, which inadvertently provided Jack with inspiration for battle. Before long, the Acheron reappeared, and the two ships faced their fateful showdown... The film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and over ten other accolades in 2004.
