The three stages in Lick's life all begin with sex: curiosity about sex at five, the first taste of forbidden fruit at sixteen, and adult self-alienation leading to unfillable mistakes. Growing up in Kenya, every crossroads in his life seemed to be manipulated by sex. The film's poetic music, cinematography, and the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden contrast with different times and spaces, becoming the director's experimental work. The film contains four groups of characters with four sets of stories—if they can be called stories: a naked Black man and a White woman reenacting the tale of Adam and Eve in the wild jungle; two boys and girls under twenty trying out love at an awkward moment; Nick, who escapes the noise with his wife and children to the countryside for a vacation, intermittently haunted by childhood experiences (especially those of panic); and Nick, transformed into a television producer on a business trip to North Africa, where we see a male crew member, who has conflicted feelings, accidentally run over a native child, leading to his girlfriend's murder by the locals—previously hinted to have a long-lost twin sister. These stories are confusing, and I can't even reorganize the content clearly. Not only are the individual stories disjointed and fleeting, lacking any symmetrical response, but even within a single story, there is no cause and effect; the audience is left clueless about why the characters behave as they do and shouldn't expect to know what they will do next. The only certainty that can pull them together is that 'The Lost Forbidden Fruit' is a re-reading of the concepts of original sin and colonial experience: the transgressive acts of modern young men and women should correspond to the legend of Adam and Eve 'living in' chaos, while the couple's vacation life in the countryside is still being eroded by the 'dream of sin' brought by civil society, especially containing a sense of guilt related to colonialism—not only using Black people to play Adam but also a pair of twins from a colonial background scattered within White society, leading to the death of a native boy and the death of a White woman as retaliation, all reflecting the author's guilty conscience. If this is what the author intended to express, then the immediate question arises: is the method of expression in the film appropriate? The rhetoric here is too embellished, like an educated and arrogant aristocrat, who, even when self-criticizing and admitting mistakes, tries to dress it up in a pretentious manner, inevitably leaving the masses perplexed. They want to say something meaningful, but the end result is a jumble of words that are hard for people to decipher—this is perhaps also a symptom of the contemporary cultural disease of aphasia.
