In the year 2285, the damaged Federation starship USS Enterprise returned to Earth's spaceport for repairs after a battle with the Khan. Kirk was still mourning the death of Spock. Dr. McCoy exhibited various abnormal behaviors, such as forcibly entering Spock's sealed quarters and rambling incoherently, eventually being sent to the hospital for a mental evaluation. Scotty was reassigned to the Federation starship USS Excelsior. The Starfleet Command issued a no-entry order for the newly formed Genesis Planet. Kirk was informed that the USS Enterprise was about to be decommissioned. Spock's father, Sarek, approached Kirk and insisted that Spock's body must be returned to Vulcan; otherwise, his soul would never find peace. Sarek demanded that Kirk return to the Genesis Planet, retrieve Spock's remains, and take them back to Vulcan—since Spock had mind-melded with McCoy before his death, McCoy also had to go to Vulcan with Spock's essence. However, Starfleet refused to allow the aging Enterprise to leave the spaceport. After hearing the news upon his release from the hospital, McCoy attempted to recruit a ship to return to the Genesis Planet. He was arrested during an argument, but this did not derail the plan: with the help of Kirk, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov, McCoy successfully escaped and boarded the abandoned Enterprise. To avoid being pursued, Scotty sabotaged the Excelsior's engines. The six partners risked their careers by piloting the Enterprise toward the Genesis Planet. On the Federation starship USS Grissom, Dr. David Marcus and Lieutenant Saavik were conducting scientific observations in the orbit of the Genesis Planet. They soon detected life forms on the surface; driven by curiosity, they beamed down and discovered Spock's empty coffin. Following readings of the life forms, they found a young, living Spock: growing rapidly but without consciousness or a soul. The Klingons arrived at the Genesis Planet around the same time, destroying the Grissom and capturing Saavik, Marcus, and young Spock as hostages. Soon after, the Enterprise arrived in the Mutara Sector, only to be attacked and rendered helpless by Kruge and his band of Klingon warriors. With the Klingons threatening to kill the hostages, Kirk attempted a cunning strategy to regain control of the situation, but it was unsuccessful. David Marcus was then killed by the Klingons. With no other choices left, Kirk had to surrender to the Klingons. To regain the upper hand, Kirk took the risk of activating the Enterprise's self-destruct sequence. The crew of the Enterprise then beamed down to the Genesis Planet, witnessing the ship's destruction in a brilliant flash of light, which also took most of Kruge's warriors with it. Kirk eventually rescued Spock and Saavik from the Klingons and killed Kruge in a one-on-one battle. Due to the unique powers of the Genesis Planet, Spock's body was resurrected and began to grow rapidly as the planet aged. As they left the unstable Genesis Planet, Spock reached the age he was at the time of his death. As they boarded the captured Bird of Prey, the Genesis Planet began to violently explode. Under Sarek's protection, the Bird of Prey reached Vulcan. After undergoing the dangerous 'Katra Transfer' ritual, Spock's essence left McCoy's consciousness and returned to his own body. The ritual succeeded, and the resurrected Spock began to recall his past and his friends. He asked the Enterprise crew why they risked their lives and careers to save him; Kirk told him that sometimes one must 'sacrifice oneself for the greater good.'
